How Billing and Retainers Work
Thank you for the trust that you have placed in Markham Law Firm. If you choose to retain our firm, a retainer agreement and an initial escrow deposit will be requested. This fee, once paid, is deposited into an escrow account, and pulled from monthly as work done in your matter is billed.
Each month, you will receive an itemized bill reflecting the work that has been done by attorneys and staff or any necessary expenses accrued in your matter and the amount taken from escrow. The Initial retainer fee is not an estimate of the overall cost of your matter.
The attorney in charge of your case is always looking ahead to the work expected in the next four weeks, such that if the amount in escrow becomes low or depleted, you will be asked to replenish the escrow account. The amount of your retainer depends on the facts of your case, the work expected, and whether your matter is in litigation. If the facts of your case change, the attorney will reach out to you and let you know what to expect pursuant to any changes in situation. Please reference your copy of the signed retainer agreement for a more in-depth explanation of billing practices.
Links to pay an invoice or replenish a retainer will be sent through our management software, Clio. If you would prefer to make a payment over the phone or if you have further questions regarding retainers and billing, please call our office at 240-396-4373.
