Liz, Paralegal
After 8 years out of the workforce, I did not know what to expect when I began working for Markham Law Firm. I first heard about the receptionist position through Hiring Our Heroes, an organization which helps veterans and military spouses find employment and train for new careers as they transition to a civilian lifestyle or a new duty station. An HOH representative told me that Markham Law Firm was looking for a compassionate individual with emotional intelligence for the receptionist position as the firmʻs clientele were often in crisis when calling.
The same care and consideration with which Markham Law Firm treats its clients extends to attorneys and staff within the firm. While the work is expected to be excellent, there is an understanding that life moves forward outside the office and that family does not need to be set aside in order to accomplish these goals.
During my time in Maryland, Markham Law Firm helped me discover strengths and interests that I did not know I possessed. Working with the amazing attorneys at the firm helped me grow both as a person and an employee and I miss the office and those co-workers every day.
Leslie, Associate
Working at Markham Law Firm is more like working with a group of friends than co-workers. We support each other not only professionally but personally and encourage each other to live our best lives. We celebrate the good days and provide support for the bad days. I’ve met so many extended family members (spouses, children, parents, even grandparents!) of the firm and I know everyone’s story, preferences, religion, politics, and even allergies. We take the time to make sure work isn’t just sitting behind a computer researching and drafting documents all day. We all do get our work done, but we also chat over coffee or while walking to pick up lunch.
Professionally everyone encourages growth in the way that best suits each person individually. I’m not an outgoing person, and I prefer not to go to court. So, most of my work focuses on drafting and reviewing retirement orders, settlement agreements, or helping others prepare for court. Others in the firm love the thrill of a courtroom so they get more litigation cases. Work distribution is based not only on the time availability of each person, but on each person’s interests and strengths.
Markham Law Firm isn’t just a place to work, it’s a place to learn how to be a great lawyer and advocate while being yourself surrounded by people who genuinely care for you
Susie, Law Clerk
Markham Law Firm is committed to law clerk professional development, focusing on the development of legal skills. As a law clerk, I was given substantive work as if I were an associate. I was responsible for drafting complaints and motions, speaking with and sometimes interviewing clients, organizing discovery (both producing and receiving/organizing discovery), drafting discovery requests, and performing legal research and drafting memorandum. I received thorough feedback and support for each assignment, allowing me to further learn, improve, and hone legal skills.
Markham Law Firm gives you the opportunity to learn about cases you are interested in. I expressed an interest in adoption work, and was immediately brought on to an adoption case and a guardianship case where I was involved in every step of those cases. Each case is a learning opportunity, and every attorney I have worked with has acted as a mentor to me – teaching me about new parts of law, providing me with the tools for success, and guiding me through each step of a case.
In addition to learning in the office, the team at Markham encourages law clerks to engage with the legal community and learn outside of day-to-day legal work. During my time at Markham, I attended chamber chats with Judges, networking events through the Women’s Bar Association of Maryland, and Continuing Legal Education webinars through both the District of Columbia and Montgomery County Bar Associations. Each event taught me about new and emerging topics in family law, such as Mahr pre-marital contracts, crucial networking tips, and other areas of professional development.
While my time at Markham was almost completely remote, the close-knit firm culture allowed me to form connections with everyone who worked there. I was learning so much about being a lawyer and practicing family law, but I was also enjoying my time, chatting with colleagues, venting about law school, and laughing at stories about the antics of everyone’s children and pets. I am so grateful for all of the experience, knowledge, and mentors I have gained while working at Markham Law Firm.
Lili, Associate
I know I am not alone when I say that starting your first job out of law school is… well terrifying. Fortunately for me though, I got to start my career surrounded by the amazing women that make up Markham Law Firm.
Learning from these women is truly an experience I only dreamed of, and every day is filled with new experiences and opportunities for growth.Imposter syndrome is very real as a first-year associate, but the women of Markham Law Firm are the most incredible mentors. They instill the trust and confidence in you that is needed to not just do your job, but excel at it. Everyone is focused on building each other up and helping you become the best versions of yourself, both personally and professionally, and ultimately it is this dynamic that allows us to provide the best representation to our clients.
Frankly, I feel spoiled that I get to call these ladies my coworkers. I don’t know how I got so lucky!

Listen to Managing Attorney Jessica Markham as she joins The LeXFactor hosts in this episode to talk about the culture of law firm work environments. Jessica dives in to how she has successfully created a happy, fulfilling workplace for her team, and her journey to make her dreams for a work environment a reality. During this episode, Jessica also discusses how she began Markham Law Firm and why she decided to make happiness the goal, instead of an unanticipated benefit of working at her firm. After starting her firm in 2015, Jessica explains how focusing on what’s important to the attorneys at her firm helps to deliver an ideal work environment that makes people want to stay. Jessica and our hosts go over the thought process behind what it takes to make attorneys feel comfortable at their job and valued while they practice.
