The Associate Attorney is responsible for providing excellent legal work to clients and firm, and representing the firm’s brand at all times, which is to be compassionate, responsive and professional.

This position is accountable for the following work:

  1. Perform extensive case-related research into relevant laws to support our arguments and theories of cases.

  2. Negotiate with opposing counsel on behalf of clients.

  3. Manage and work collaboratively with junior associates, paralegals, and law clerks, mentoring and providing teaching moments.

  4. Draft pleadings, correspondence, and agreements.

  5. Maintain client relationships by communicating (via email and telephone) often with clients and explaining complex legal proceedings and concepts to them.  Keep clients informed of the status of their case at all times. 

  6. Communicate effectively, professionally, and responsibly with opposing counsel and court. 

  7. Keep office apprised of case status and deadlines. Organize online and paper files.  Case status and task status are updated on Asana regularly.

  8. Ability to work on and organize multiple cases at the same time, managing smaller cases independently and serving as second chair on larger matters, supporting the Principals. 

  9. Represent clients at Court hearings, mediation, conferences, and depositions. 

  10. Involvement with trial proceedings; working with support staff in organizing evidence; preparing exhibits; scheduling witnesses; ensuring that witnesses are ready/prepared when needed. 

  11. Attend CLEs, bar association events, business development and networking functions with firm members and solo.

  12. Prepare blog posts and assist in writing and researching articles.  

  13. Perform all other legal-related tasks as requested. 

The candidate must:  

  1. Genuinely like working with people, with empathy and patience.

  2. Embrace service-oriented problem solving, taking the initiative to act quickly and decisively when a client experiences a problem that requires a prompt solution.

  3. Possess the ability to understand that clients have different styles and needs and adapt accordingly.

  4. Exercise sound judgment, high integrity, trustworthiness, and ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

  5. Submit the best version of work and carefully checks before submission to make certain case facts are correct and free of typos (i.e. dates, places, relief requests, etc.).  

  6. Not be afraid to ask questions or to collaborate on finding a solution for a problem. 

  7. Interest in advancing knowledge of family law through taking on new challenges and regularly attending CLEs.

  8. Being willing to step outside comfort zone to take on new challenges, particularly with respect to litigation.

  9. Promote the firm within their network, personally, virtually, and on social media, to lay foundation for business development. 

  10. Write clearly and concisely. Produce a timely, accurate, and persuasive work product.

  11. Must be good at working in a team environment and take constructive criticism well when offered.

Salary:

  • $70,000 - $90,000 annual base, based on years of experience

  • Bonus eligible

Work Environment/Location:

  • Hybrid in office 3 days a week

  • Opportunity to office out of Bethesda or Washington, DC (Glover Park) locations

Required Education and Work Experience:

  • JD from accredited law school

  • Admission to the Maryland Bar

  • Admission to District of Columbia Bar a plus. Otherwise, eligible to be admitted to the District of Columbia Bar.

  • Demonstrated commitment to local bar associations as an active participant a plus.
